Billion
Beats Day 2007 Friday 19th October
Billion Beats
Day is on again for it 3rd year. Join Schools from around Australia
and even overseas try new and fun activities to get the heart
pumping. If you joined in either of the first 2 Billion Beats Days
you will be sent updates as to how to be involved in the
Australia's Largest Activity Event for kids.
In 2005 Totally Active and
the Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and
Recreation (ACHPER) launched
Billion Beats Day to raise awareness in children, parents and the
community of the long term benefits of a more active and
healthy lifestyle. The event is a celebration of the positive
social learning experienced by young people as a result of their
involvement in sport and physical education. Part of the purpose of
involvement is for schools to ‘pat themselves on the back’ for the
excellent work they have carried out and the impact and influence
they have had on students
The
Goal
The idea is to have enough
children being active during the event so that the total number of
heartbeats exceeds 1 billion. Each school can submit a simple
registration form with the number of children, activities
undertaken and average heartbeats for the duration. The total
number of heartbeats for each school will be submitted.
The
Organisers
Totally
Active
A not for profit organisation
whose mission is to improve the long term health and fitness of
Australia's youth by promoting sound and sustainable lifestyle
changes.
The Totally Active team is
lead by Steve Brossman who is regarded internationally as one of
the leaders in children’s activity programs and is backed up by
some of Australia’s leading nutrition, health and psychological
experts in this area.
The
Event
Students are encouraged to be
active for one hour (less for preschoolers) on Friday19th
October 2007. They will participate in organised, activities,
Sport or Physical Education activities.
PreSchools, Primary and High
Schools as well as home schoolers will be able to register and will
receive an information kit detailing
- Suggested activities and
organisation guidelines
- Handouts for children and
parents on benefits of quality sport and physical education
programs
- Registration forms and
processes
- Prizes to be won
Guidelines
Modification of traditional
Sport and Physical Education Activities are recommended. Activities
that are in tune with the current needs of today’s students are
also encouraged.
An activity must comply with
all accepted safety standards and be compatible with the Health and
Physical Education Curriculum/Syllabus Frameworks of the Australian
states and territories and should encourage;
- Maximum
Participation. The activities chosen must be able to be
participated in by the entire group at the same time
- Continuous Activity.
Children are constantly moving and not stationary for long periods
waiting for a turn. This will create more heartbeats
- Fun and Achievable
activities. It is important to promote a sense of enjoyment in
physical activity through group activities and games that can
increase confidence and self esteem.
Celebrity
Involvement
National and international
sporting celebrities have already indicated their support to the
event and may be available on the day in certain localities.
As the event gains exposure additional sporting and media
personalities will lend their support.
Offering schools an
opportunity to be selected to have these personalities visit their
school and encourage the active lifestyle will provide an incentive
for schools to register.
Opportunities
Billion Beats Day will
provide an excellent opportunity to celebrate the International
Year of Sport and Physical Education for Government, Catholic and
Independent schools. It is a practical way of raising awareness of
the need for sustainable lifestyle changes in our children to
reduce the ongoing effects of inactivity, overweight and
obesity.
It will also allow health and
physical education and classroom teachers to demonstrate the
critically important role they play in the broader education and
social development of students.
The organisers will be
developing education and awareness materials as well as practical
resources for teachers and students to use in conjunction with this
event. These will require funding and there are sponsorship
opportunities available.
We will also be looking for
suitable prizes as incentives and rewards for schools and children
to participate.
Exposure
All (Primary and Secondary)
Schools will be contacted with information about the event and all
participating schools will be supplied with resource kits to
effectively conduct the event.
There will be a media
campaign leading up to the event and coverage on the day This
provides sponsorship partners excellent exposure to students,
teachers and parents across Australia.
In 1997 Totally Active
founder Steve Brossman conducted a similar event “Project ACES”
(All Children Exercise Simultaneously) where over 170,000 children
participated and Television coverage was received in each State. It
is expected that over 2,000 Schools will participate with more than
200,000 children joining in.
